Our morning routine has changed a little, so I can enjoy waking up and not listening to the girl’s tails bang against my closet doors.

Ivy sleeps in her crate, or bed (depending on if she was a good girl the night before) and Addie cozies up in a blanket on the couch.

Each morning, I go out to see the girls and they’re [im]patiently waiting by my door to say hello. Next, they run past me, into my closet and grab a sock. I wasn’t sure at first why they do it, but its become their daily routine. If the drawer is shut, they somehow wiggle it open to grab the biggest, most cuddly sock they can find.

They’re my little gift givers… and they carry the socks around everywhere…

Addie’s done this since she was a puppy, and since teaching Ivy, I’m finding a dozen socks a day around the house. Ivy gets a little carried away and thinks the more she brings me, the more attention she’ll get. Addie on the other hand, just want one to lay with while she takes her morning nap under the covers.

But Ivy has started a new trend…

Ivy has now learned that slippers and shoes are kind of like bigger socks. Except these are much more fun to cuddle with than to carry as gifts.

Before I leave my room in the morning, I can hear her carrying my shoes down the stairs. My boots clunk on every step she takes as she brings them to her bed. She never chews them (not mine at least), but instead, brings them to her bed to remind me that she was thinking about me while I wasn’t with her.

When I open the bedroom door, she then grabs her gift sock.

She’s a quirky girl…

She also needs a shoe to nap. It’s the strangest thing, but if you see her napping, you know there’s a shoe nearby…

Sometimes she lays on them, sometimes she sticks her nose in them…and other times, well the sock will have to be good enough…

I’m not sure if it’s comforting to them…having little articles of our scent to carry around. But it’s a constant in this house.

To me, it’s a little reminder that they’re trying to show me they love me and were thinking about me.

But to them, I think it’s something else…

Often times, I’ve gone to leave the house and realize a shoe is suddenly missing from its spot…

The closer they are to the shoe, the quicker they can hide it to prevent me from leaving.

Whatever the reason they take it, I know there’s a meaning behind it. They’re always teaching me new lessons.

Today’s Lesson: love comes in many forms. Whether it’s a lick in the face, or a sock in their mouth…they sure do go through a lot of trouble to show you how much you mean to them.
