Somehow, it’s already been three weeks that we’ve had the puppies and the amount they’ve grown in such a short time span is mind-blowing.
Last week, I told you that they were just starting to open their eyes and were learning how to walk…and in just one week they’ve done all that and more.
Now they’re running and playing…their teeth are popping in and they’re starting to really show off their personalities.
We started feeding them real food – or what we like to call gruel. It’s puppy food, vitamins and water all mashed together so it is soft enough for them to eat.
Miss Addie has started to spend less time with them and more with her [human] family…you can tell their little teeth and nails are starting to bother her. We’re feeding them small amounts of gruel, 3 times a day to make sure their bellies stay full and she’s taking the night shift for us and giving them milk while we sleep.
We also finally figured out all of their names…it’s surprisingly more difficult than you’d think to pick out 11 cute names…
For girls, we have : Belle, Lulu, Cookie, Perri (short for Periwinkle), Vivy and Lucile
For boys, we have: Gus, Hank the Tank, Oscar, Tito and Scrappy-Do
They’re all starting to develop individual personalities and are making so much progress. We had to move them out of their whelping box, since most of them had learned to escape from it already…
They bark and wrestle…run around and climb things. They’re they cutest little souls and I cant wait to see their continued progress.
I’m not sure if other breeders see all the changes in the puppies like we do.
Well, to start we aren’t a breeder…we’re just a family who had fun having puppies the first time, so we decided to try one final time.
They’re part of our family until they go to their new ones…and after that, we still check in on them through Addie’s Facebook Page.
These puppies are played with everyday and we give them so much human interaction. It’s probably why I’ve noticed all of the changes they make and how quickly…they really mean so much to us.
I’m definitely a dog mom…
Starting this week, to improve their transition into their new homes, we’re working to teach them how to use puppy pads.
Did you know mother’s will clean up after their puppies to protect them from predators and keep their “den” nice and clean? It’s gross but, Addie will actually eat their poop…
Although it’s more work for us, it makes us happy to see Addie going back to her normal, playful self instead of worrying about her babies all the time.
She literally would do anything for her puppies…the selflessness she’s had since they were born is amazing.
A mother’s instinct I guess.
Today’s Lesson: we’ve had this theme before…selflessness. When you see Addie, you might see a dog (a tennis ball loving dog). The past three years she’s been in my life, and past two more specifically with the puppies, I’ve learned so much from her. She’s selfless, loving, nurturing…she gives up all of her time alone to be with her babies. Her elbows are scabbed from laying in odd positions to feed them milk and she still doesn’t like to leave their side.. I mean, how much more selfless can you be…eating your puppie’s poop?
