We have some exciting news we’ve been keeping to ourselves…

Addie is having puppies!

Although we had originally only planned on having one litter, I think higher powers had other plans in a store for us…

But why wouldn’t we want to breed again?

It really was so fun…

We played with the puppies all day and someone was always home to take care of them. They all went to such great homes and really filled the hearts of those who adopted them.

It was the best way to begin “quarantine”…

But I was still not convinced.

It was a lot of work – the feedings, the cleaning, the endless amounts of poop. Not only did I have to make sure all 11 puppies were taken care of, but I had to make sure Miss Addie was taken care of too.

She would feed her babies and then play ball all day long. We made sure she had plenty of time to herself, and still got the family time she loved.  She was so active and doing so much to take care of her puppies that it was making her really skinny. They were sucking the life out of her, and the 10 cups of food she was eating a day was what it took to keep her healthy.

She loved her babies and would do anything for them.

From the moment she had them, she knew exactly what to do and taking care of them came so naturally to her.

She was the best mom…always cleaning and always feeding them. Once they got a little bigger she would jump around in a circle, so excited to be able to play with them.

Once they all went to their new homes (aside from Ivy of course), she got really depressed.  She had dry fur, she would go to the bathroom in the house, get sick during the day and she would sleep the rest of the time. Although she loved Ivy, you could tell there was something missing.

We learned that dogs can go through postpartum depression the same way that humans can.

It was really hard to watch.

Addie was scheduled to be spayed in November. I confirmed her appointment on a Friday, and over the weekend, we all had a discussion about doing it again.

Somehow, the vets office had a case of COVID on Sunday night, and were unable to keep our spaying appointment for the next day. They had planned to call us back and reschedule once they coordinated with all of the other appointments, but we only had a finite amount of time before her next heat cycle.

They never called to reschedule her appointment.

Everyone thought it was fate and it really made us reminisce on all of the fun it was to have the puppies around.

So, we decided to do it again.

It really is amazing how dogs are bred and create babies.

They’re only pregnant for roughly two months and after another two months are big and strong enough to enter their own world in new homes.

In two months, she created 11 healthy little souls. It’s unfathomable.

We’ll soon get an X-Ray, to see how many puppies are in her belly and confirm she is pregnant. Although we’re seeing all the signs, it’s good to check and see how many puppies are in there. Last time around, we saw between 6-8, but boy were we off!

A new littler of puppies will definitely be an exciting experience and I’m happy that other families will get to have an Addie of their own.

Today’s Lesson: as Saji Ijiyemi would say, “we have plans for life but sometimes, life has a different plan for us”. I had a plan for Addie, but life had other plans in store for her.
