I thought I figured it out…

I thought I had a way to keep the dogs in the back seat, instead of them trying to climb onto my lap while I’m driving…

I bought this dog netting from Amazon to put across the seat so the dogs can’t climb into the front. It’s pretty cool, and was only about $11, so I figured, if it didn’t work…it was cheap enough that it was worth trying. The netting opens up so you can actually store stuff in between, and stretches far enough to give you some good height when trying to hold your dog back. It works for any car or SUV, as long as your headrest goes up enough to clip it to.

This was my expectation…

I expected Ivy to sit like a little angel, and hangout right behind me while I drive.

While Addie is independent and just walks around the backseat to check out the scenes at each window, Ivy wants to sit on my lap while I drive. She’s a bit more clingy than Addie and requires constant attention, so having her see me, but unable to climb into the front would be helpful. It should be interesting to see if she’s this clingy when she’s fully grown…

So I quickly installed the netting and off we went. Ivy was being great and I thought I solved all of my problems.

But sometimes our expectations do not match up with reality..

Ivy saw the netting as a new challenge. It was there to test her limits to see really how far she was willing to go. She tried to find every possible way to get into the front seat with me. She tried to climb over, she tried to climb under, and well…she tried to climb through it.

I had to stop multiple times to get her in the back. She finally found a way to sit that made her happy. She was within snouts reach, and she wasn’t letting me out of her sight.

And well, this was how it was going to be…

She was determined to be with me, and this was how she was going to do it. She couldn’t see anything but she didn’t care. She was back to being my copilot.

It’s a start, I suppose…

Today’s Lesson: be flexible with your goals. You can’t make it to the top without working to get there. Although sometimes we think we have the solution, we might not. It’s ok to be flexible and use small goals to reach larger ones. I still haven’t figured out how to keep Ivy in the back seat, but I know I’m getting there…
