So where did it all start? What made us choose this little puppy to take home?
We knew we wanted our family to grow, but didn’t know when would be the right time. I guess you never really know when, it just happens. We met with a breeder and looked at lots of puppies, we signed a contract and knew in a few short weeks that we could go back to pick up our little girl. They sat us in a pen with three small puppies. One was sleeping, one was crying and the other…well, was Addie. She was cuddly and loving, playful and cute. We were beyond excited to come back in a few weeks to finally take her home.
Two weeks went by and today was the day. I had been counting my sleeps, knowing that there were 0 more without my puppy by my side. We brought her home and everyone was in love. They were crying tears of joy, that we get to spend the next potentially 15 years with this beautiful little soul. She had her tiny pink bow on and stole everyone’s heart. She swam in the pond and met her new, life long best friend – Stella aka Auntie Stell.
This was a big day for her, and she kept us on our toes for the next few months. Barking, growling at her food and learning her new routine…she was the perfect addition that we needed.
We named her Ariadne, and call her Addie for short. Ariadne was a princess in Greek mythology, who was known for navigating her way through labyrinths, and safely returning home. We knew that living on the water and being boaters, our little lab would always bring us back to port safely.
Where are we now?
Today, Addie is almost two and a mother to 11, yes 11, beautiful puppies. On March 11, she had 6 females and 5 males who are as healthy as can be. You love your dog, but you don’t always know how much you can trust them. I didn’t know I could trust that her natural, “motherly” instincts would kick in. She’s a very wild girl – as you will learn through the tales of her adventures, but she completely blew our minds. From the first puppy popping out, to the last one arriving a few hours later, she was a non-stop mother.
It’s been a few weeks now, and they have yet to get on her nerves. They climb on her face, suck all of the energy out of her and are constantly vying for her attention. Every moment of the day (minus when she has a tennis ball), she is loving those puppies and doing everything she can to teach them the way of the world.
The purpose of this blog is to bring you back to the beginning of her existence and explain where we are today. Each blog will teach you a lesson, share a laugh or make you pause and realize just how important little things in life can be.
Today’s Lesson: appearances are often misleading. Don’t assume that because someone or something seems incapable, their qualities wont shine when called upon. As you read through her stories, you’ll learn how crazy she can be and think back and say “wait, she did what!?” This isn’t the first lesson Addie’s taught us, and I’m sure it wont be the last.
