A dog’s sense of time is amazing. I get that they wake up when they have to pee as puppies, but overtime they learn your routine and somehow understand when it’s time to do things.

For example, my boyfriend wakes up early for work. On average, he gets up between 4:30 AM and 5:30 AM. Addie and Ivy have quickly learned their routine.

Dad wakes up and gets ready for work; Mom wakes up to let us out…then we go back to bed and cuddle.

Boy, do I wish they knew how to sleep in…

Unfortunately, their internal alarm clock doesn’t know weekends, late days or days off.

At 5:16 every morning, instead of being woken by the sound of alarm bells…I’m woken to the sound of tails slamming against the closet doors. Their tails wag so hard, it instantly wakes me up…almost better than my alarm itself actually would. They don’t seem to get that it’s not time to wake up yet, but they also don’t seem to care. They’re not ready to start the day, but ready to  either bring me to the couch to lay with them or hop into bed.

Unfortunately their cuddle session and my nap doesn’t last long; their next internal alarm clock will wake me up again at 6:15 AM for breakfast.

Although at the time it’s a bit annoying, hearing the consistent bangs against the door…it’s also heartwarming that this is what they look forward to everyday. It’s great to start each and every morning feeling so loved. I wonder where we would be without each other.

Today’s lesson: be careful what you teach your furry friends. Their minds work in ways we’ll never understand! Had I known they’d learn this routine so quickly, I would’ve had a backup plan.
